What Is Faith?

Faith in Scripture is trust in a person, not certainty about an outcome.

Historical context
The Greek word translated faith, pistis, carried the sense of trust, loyalty and faithfulness in ordinary usage — the confidence you place in a reliable person, and the reliability you show in return.
The lesson
Hebrews 11:1 calls faith the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. That is not wishful thinking; it is confidence grounded in the character of the one trusted. Hebrews then gives a list of examples, and it is a strikingly mixed group of people, several of whom failed badly.
Faith is not the absence of doubt. The father in Mark 9 says "I believe; help my unbelief," and Jesus heals his son. That prayer is in Scripture because it is honest, and it was answered.
Faith is not certainty about outcomes either. Hebrews 11:39 notes that many of the faithful did not receive what was promised in their lifetime. Faith trusts the person of God even when the timeline is not disclosed.
Faith is also active. James insists that faith without works is dead — not that works earn anything, but that real trust shows. Abraham's faith looked like packing.
Practically, faith grows the way trust in any person grows: through knowing them better, remembering what they have already done, and continuing to act on that knowledge in the dark.
