Grace Explained

Unearned favour — and why it produces obedience rather than excusing its absence.

Historical context
In Roman society, favour operated through patronage: a benefactor gave, and the recipient owed loyalty and public honour in return. Paul uses that familiar vocabulary while removing the calculation — the gift is given to those with nothing to offer and no standing to repay.
The lesson
Grace is God's favour given to people who have not earned it and cannot repay it. Ephesians 2 states it directly: by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Two mistakes are common.
The first is thinking grace is God overlooking sin. It is not indulgence. Romans 3 insists God is both just and the one who justifies; the cost was borne, not waived.
The second is thinking grace makes obedience optional. Paul raises the objection himself — shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase? — and answers it emphatically. Ephesians 2:10 puts the logic plainly: saved not by good works, but for them. Titus 2 says the same grace that saves also trains us to renounce ungodliness. Grace changes motive, not standard: obedience becomes gratitude rather than payment.
Practically, grace ends two exhausting projects — proving you are good enough, and hiding when you are not. Both become unnecessary.
