How to Study Scripture

A repeatable method for reading a passage carefully: observe, interpret in context, then apply.

Historical context
The Bereans in Acts 17 are commended not for accepting Paul quickly but for examining the Scriptures daily to test what he said. Careful reading has always been treated as an act of faithfulness, not suspicion.
The lesson
Three steps, always in order.
Observe. Read the passage twice before deciding what it means. Note who is speaking, to whom, and what is actually said. Mark repeated words, contrasts, commands, and connecting words such as therefore, but and so that. Resist the urge to jump to meaning.
Interpret. Ask what the author intended his first readers to understand. Read the surrounding paragraphs; most misreadings are context failures. Consider the genre. Check cross references that use the same language. Where a passage seems to contradict clearer teaching elsewhere, let the clear interpret the unclear.
Apply. Ask what this reveals about God, what it asks of his people, and what one concrete change it calls for now. Application follows interpretation; it does not replace it.
Two cautions. A verse lifted from its paragraph can be made to say almost anything, and a study that never changes the reader has stopped short. FaithTrainer's lessons are study aids. They do not replace Scripture itself, your own reading, your local church, or pastoral guidance.
