The major eras of biblical history in order, so passages stop floating free of their moment.

Place the main biblical events and figures in chronological order and name the era each belongs to.

Historical context
Ancient dating is approximate, and scholars differ, particularly on the earliest periods. The eras below give a working framework rather than precise years.
The lesson
A rough framework holds the story together.
Patriarchs. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph — a family, not yet a nation, living as resident foreigners.
Egypt and exodus. Israel multiplies in Egypt, is enslaved, and is rescued under Moses. The law is given at Sinai, and a generation passes in the wilderness.
Conquest and judges. Joshua leads Israel into Canaan. The book of Judges describes a repeating cycle of unfaithfulness, oppression, crying out and deliverance.
United kingdom. Saul, then David, then Solomon. The temple is built in Jerusalem.
Divided kingdom. After Solomon, ten northern tribes separate as Israel; Judah remains in the south. Prophets speak into both.
Exile. Assyria destroys the northern kingdom; Babylon destroys Jerusalem and its temple and deports Judah.
Return. Under Persia, exiles return in stages; the temple and walls are rebuilt under Zerubbabel, Ezra and Nehemiah.
Between the Testaments. Greek then Roman rule reshapes the region. Synagogues, Pharisees and messianic expectation take the form the Gospels assume.
Jesus and the church. Jesus is born under Roman rule, ministers in Galilee and Judea, is crucified and raised. The church spreads, and the New Testament is written within a single generation of these events.
